Surgical Procedures
Bariatric surgery comprises numerous surgical procedures. After surgery a change in dietary habits or even better in general life style is required to reach an effective weight loss in the long run. A regain of the body weight is basically possible after all types of surgery but largely depends on the long-term eating behaviour of the patient.
The different surgical procedures can be classified into two categories depending on their underlying principle:
- Restrictive (e.g. banding or sleeve gastrectomy)
- Malabsorptive (e.g. bileopancreatic diversion)
- Combination (restriction and malabsorption, e.g. gastric bypass)
All procedures can be performed laparascopically. Only few cases have to be performed in open surgery.
