Medication
In addition to diet, physical activity and behavioural changes, specific medication can be supportive. Currently, two drugs for weight loss treatment are registered on the Swiss market (Reductil and Xenical). In Switzerland, the costs for these drugs are covered by the health insurance for patients with BMI>35 kg/m2 for at least 6 months. In case of diabetes, the drugs are paid already for patients with BMI >27 kg/m2. Both drugs should never be prescribed isolated but only in the context of a specific weight loss programme, ideally accompanied by professional supervision.
In case of binge-eating, antidepressants like Fluoxetin sometimes can be helpful. However, antidepressants should always be prescribed within a specific psychological treatment.
